I have always enjoyed art. I have been painting seriously for the last four years. I'm currently studying through the Virtual Art Academy. My favorite Medium is oil paint. I use water miscible oils , a new form of paint that has been modified to mix with water. They work as beautifully as traditional paints, and are as durable but are more environmentally friendly. I find much joy in the beauty of nature & simple things. It is a thrill to try to capture a part of life's exquisite splendor in light, shadow and color on canvas. To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; This is to have succeded. More Violets! I wanted to do one of these on a bigger canvas. I love how complimentary colors work together. I don't usually use purple and yellow as much, but I like how this turned out.
Violets have been my obsession lately. These close ups have been a good exercise in cropping for me. I've been trying to keep my brush strokes really loose. I love plants. I have a collection of violets that are in full bloom. My first one Andrew got me when we were newly married (17 years ago!) The purple ones that I've painted are smaller plants that I've split off from my original. I like the pattern of lights and darks they make on the canvas. Notan is something I've been learning about in my classes. Notan is a Japanese word meaning light and dark. A strong Notan pattern adds to the visual appeal of a painting.
I painted this off a picture that Andrew took on New Year's Eve. He climbed up Mineral Ridge. We really love the view of Coeur d' Alene Lake from here, even though the hike is really steep. In my Virtual Art Academy Lessons I'm studying a unit on Visual Music and Poetry. The Poetry of a painting being what the artist is trying to communicate--aesthetic beauty, emotion, description etc. The Music is the abstract design and brushwork. I've been trying to learn to have a specific focus to my paintings and leave out distracting detail. This is a challenge for me to learn in landscapes. On this painting I was trying to focus on the sunset and reflection on the Lake. I think I maybe over worked the sky.

I thought painting these garlic cloves would be simple. I found it more challenging than I expected. I was satisfied with the end result though and like the green background and warm creamy yellow on the garlic.
My family's favorite vacation spot is the beach. We love the lure of the ocean. As an artist it always inspires me. The west coast has some really picturesque lighthouses. This is Yaquina Head, the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast.

We are having a blast of winter here. It was 4 degrees out when I got up. When the sun came up every little branch of the trees in our yard was coated with frost and the air was sparkling with ice crystals. Winter can be so beautiful! It's a good time to take time to count your blessings and have a hot drink!
Two summers ago, Andrew and I took a backpacking trip around Mt. Hood. The hike was grueling, the view spectacular, and the wildflowers exquisite. This is painted from a photograph that Andrew took. From one of our camp sites, we could look out our tent at the sun setting on Mt. Hood and the other direction we could see Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. Our hike was cut short by an lightening caused fire. We had to be evacuated. We've often wondered what the view held the last 10 miles of the trail.
I guess I'm thinking of summer. We had a beautiful snowfall this week, 12 inches overnight. It was nice while it lasted. Today it rained and turned it all to dirty looking slush. Tonight it'll probably freeze. This rose seemed so cheerful to me. It is painted from a picture of a rose in the lovely Manito Park in Spokane, WA.
This is another doll my grandmother made for me. She was a very creative seamstress. For birthdays and Christmas, she'd always send something wonderful--a flannel nightgown, a doll or doll dress, a stuffed animal or a little purse. I've loved this little Raggedy Ann since I was two years old. I've had a lot of fun doing these "Old Friends", and doll paintings, and will probably do a few more.
